Folk Art Dreamcatcher Necklace Vintage 60s. “Botanical jewelry” is handmade out of seeds & beans. Sort of a squash blossom / mandala style BIG round medallion pendant with dangles. The seeds & beans are all individually hand drilled & strung. This came from the estate of a UC Berkeley professor whose family had a coffee plantation in South America. They traveled extensively throughout the region purchasing textiles & art from various tribes. A handwritten list of tribes to visit for different types of art was found among their belongings. I have some other neat pieces from this same estate & will be listing them in my store. Super cool finds!!
Botanical jewellery, or jewellery made from parts of plants, not only has a history dating back to ancient times, it also has a history which touches almost all cultures. Dried seed & bean jewelry enjoyed a resurgence in popularity during the 1960s with the hippie culture’s interest in folk inspired handicrafts.
